Frostburg State University’s Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education degree program prepares students for certification to teach grades 1-6 in Maryland in a specific content area. At the core of the program is a strong experiential component, which begins with shadow days and classroom observation, culminating in a two-semester internship experience of more than 100 days teaching students in a school setting.

With a degree in elementary education, students can look forward to a fulfilling career helping children discover the world around them. Designed for students with an interest in teaching and a passion for education, the B.S. in elementary education program at FSU is well respected and has a high rate of graduate placement in regional Maryland schools.

An Elementary Education Major That’s as Unique as You Are

FSU’s elementary education majors may use our individualized concentration option to build their own degree program around specific teaching interests, such as a foreign language or technology. Frostburg State is also the first and only college in Maryland to offer an elementary/middle school dual certification program for those wanting to concentrate on middle school education in grades 4-9.

  • Educational resources
    When you earn your bachelor’s in elementary education at Frostburg State, you’ll gain access to educational resources such as the Children’s Literature Centre (CLC). This resource serves an important role in building new and innovative approaches to literacy through technology. The CLC integrates you into the Frostburg community so that you can promote reading within the classroom and allows you to build skills working with children of different ages.

    As a student in our B.S. in elementary education program, you’ll join a learning community brimming with educators inspired to make a difference in the lives of children. You’ll develop a deeper understanding of the teaching profession and gain skills that will help you become a strong advocate for education and a leader in the field. You may also join the Frostburg Student Education Association to network with other teachers and prospective educators in the field.

  • Showcase your work
    Becoming an educator equipped to inspire young minds is hard work, but at Frostburg State, you’ll be prepared to do just that. As you prepare to graduate and enter your career, you’ll create and present a portfolio of your work that highlights all you’ve accomplished as an elementary education major. You’ll also complete the PRAXIS II content knowledge and pedagogy tests required by the state of Maryland for licensure.

  • Level up your degree
    Once you’ve earned your bachelor’s degree in teaching, you can take it to the next level! Frostburg State University offers master’s degrees in education, such as a Master of Arts in Teaching degree (MAT) and a Master of Education degree (M.Ed.). Some of our master’s degree programs are offered online and include the opportunity to specialize in subjects like special education, school counseling, literacy and educational leadership. What You'll Learn

In addition to the foundation you’ll build in general education coursework, as an elementary education major, you’ll have the opportunity to explore courses in learning and instruction, special and multicultural education and educational technology. In this range of education courses designed to empower you as a teacher and leader, you’ll learn to:
  • Navigate teaching processes and pedagogy in the American educational system, including the study of human growth and development, learning theories and styles and instructional strategies. You’ll also acquire experience in using technology to support any curriculum. 
  • Develop and nurture the characteristics of exceptional children. You’ll understand how exceptionalities, American culture, race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic class, religion, age, language and intellectual ability influence learning. In addition, you’ll delve into the historical and legal influences on American schools and community agencies.
